What is the Landmine Survivors Rehabilitation Database?
The Rehabilitation Services Database is designed to track the resources and programs in mine-affected countries that could serve to improve the lives of landmine victims, their families and their communities. In 2000, the Rehabilitation Database profiled four mine-affected countries Bosnia and Herzegovina, Eritrea, Jordan and Mozambique. In 2002, the Database has added profiles for two additional mine-affected countries: El Salvador and Ethiopia.
With support from United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) and United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), Landmine Survivors Network (LSN) established or supported development of amputee peer support networks in each of the six mine-affected countries profiled in the Rehabilitation Services Database. The networks were established to build in-country capacity to track needs and resources for landmine survivors and persons with disabilities. The networks serve to link mine victims and other persons with disabilities to existing services, to provide them with direct assistance, and to educate families and communities about living with limb loss and disability.
The Rehabilitation Services Database is part of LSN's on-going effort to track rehabilitation services for landmine survivors and persons with disabilities.
What is Landmine Survivors Network (LSN)?
Landmine Survivors Network is the first international organization created by landmine survivors for survivors. Founded in 1995 by two American survivors, LSN's mission is two-pronged: to link survivors and other amputees in mine-affected countries to a range of rehabilitation services; and to protect future generations from the scourge of landmines by advocating that governments ban and destroy antipersonnel mines and offer relief to wounded populations.
What is United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS)?
United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) was created to oversee all UN activities in the areas of humanitarian mine action and peacekeeping demining. The goal of UNMAS is "to recreate an environment where people can live safely, where victims needs are addressed, and where economic health and social development can occur free from the constraints imposed by landmines."
